Fanpenciltastic: Billy and the Missing Alphabet Adventures
He gets more than his share, though, when he heads out into the world on a quest to find A's friends B to Z. Where they are, is a mystery, but Billy has to find them before A is moving to a new home.
In a whirlwind of adventures, Billy has to brave raging rivers, fight fires, and deal with giant spiders, liars, and crooks. He will need all the help his new animal friends like Dudley Bug, Miss Eagerdig, Director Daydoze, and Gobble DeGoop can give him.
With only fourteen days to go, it's a race against time.Still, twenty-five letters should be hard to miss. After all, how big can the world be?
Will Billy keep his promise and find the letters in time, or will A lose her friends forever?
Billy wants adventures--and Holy Jotter, does he get them!
FANPENCILTASTIC has everything children will love; adventures, fun, friendship, a fairy tale, jokes, tongue twisters, mystery, and lovable animal characters.
Each of the twenty-six chapters features a fun adventure as we follow Billy the pencil over fields, through forests, into factories, across farm yards, and join his epic quest.
Mark Kelly, National School Principal:
"Fanpenciltastic sparkles with wit and humour, artfully smuggling the learning of words into a beautiful story of a pencil on a quest. Billy the Pencil is a character that children will love, bursting with energy, helping whoever he meets as he journeys through the world. The quality of Tessa's writing is matched by the gorgeous illustrations that stud the story. Very impressive indeed. My nine-year-old loved it."
Right away I was immersed in Billy's story as the main character, and that was just the beginning. Each new letter introduced also brought in smaller fantastical sub-stories, with magical elements of their own. If you enjoyed Tad's adventures in the Leap Frog Letter Factory (or any of those Leap Frog books), you'll appreciate this story as well.
While reading, my educator-brain flew into action, thinking of the many ways to use this book in early childhood and elementary curriculum. Because each letter has its own adventure connected to Billy, each one was given its own chapter, which would provide a great opportunity for a teacher to read one chapter per day to accompany a letter-themed curriculum. Children would delight in hearing about Billy's daily adventures with a new letter friend, and learning the words with the corresponding beginning sounds. The author even sneaks in small-but-significant facts about animals, nature, and life to interest the advanced readers (or adults who might be reading this to their young children). Commendable!
There were so many interesting elements, I would have a hard time naming just one as my favorite. All the pieces flowed well and fit seamlessly together, and the illustrations were spot-on with the plot points.
I highly recommend this story to any parent, caregiver, or educator of young children (even up to third-grade level). It can be used as a tool for educating, entertaining, or simply transitioning between activities during the day.
Thank you, Ms. Kavanaugh, for this inspiring and amazing contribution to the world of children's literature. I look forward to reading more about Billy in the upcoming books!
